This Thistle tableware was made in the pottery of A.W. Buchan in Portobello, near Edinburgh, Scotland and the design was hand-painted in the factory by the decorators. Thistleware was very popular and was exported world-wide, in particular to America. Of all the patterns made in the Buchan pottery, the thistle was problably the most well-known. These goods were known as Thistle Ware from 1946, the cleverly designed thistle trademark was registered in 1949, and the works were known as the Thistle Pottery from 1955 until its closure in 1972.
